“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” Animal Therapy helps…

Making a difference – one paw at a time – using Animal Therapy
PAWsitivity is an animal therapy service for children, young people and their families which can include the presence of a dog to assist in the counselling process. We offer an alternative to a traditional counselling session as it does not simply involve talking.
Including the dog in the session creates a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere where the client will feel understood and accepted.
The non-judgemental and unconditional relationship that is formed between the client and the dog can improve social, emotional and behavioural needs in children.

PAWsitivity can help your child to:
• Understand & manage their feelings
• Increase patience
• Solve problems on their own
• Get along better with friends
• Have lasting friendships
• Improve their self confidence
• Understand & be aware of their bodies
• Manage difficult behaviour
• Reduce anxiety, grief and isolation

Animal assisted therapy simply means using animals in therapeutic work.
The presence of the dog helps to reduce stress, increases feel good hormones and helps to build a trusting relationship between the professional and client.
It is easier for clients to form a bond with the dog as there is no pressure or judgement. During the sessions clients can practice their social, and emotional skills in a safe environment with the guidance and support of the counsellor.
The relationship the client develops with the dog motivates their engagement and commitment to come back for future sessions.

Some of the techniques used in the sessions include:
• Arts and sand play
• Mindfulness
• Breathing techniques
• Body awareness
• Movement
• Music
• Sound
• Creative writing
